Adventures in Watercolour – watercolour, line and wash

3 June to 10 June 2025

Having worked in most mediums, Sue’s favourite medium is watercolour due to its unique qualities, transparency and immediacy. She finds it the perfect medium for capturing mood and atmosphere and so convenient for transporting and working outdoors. Her favourite subjects include landscapes, flowers, animals and dancers. Sue is known for her soft yet often vibrant watercolour work which often includes looseness and movement, especially in her flamenco dancer paintings. She is a fully qualified teacher.

Sue has exhibited widely including the Artist and Leisure Painter magazine annual Open Exhibition at Patchings Art Centre, Nottingham, the Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition at the prestigious Mall Galleries, London and FabrianoinAcquarello, Italy. She was awarded a Rising Star Future Master Award at the U.K. International Watercolour Masters Competition, in 2020 and a Top 200 in 2022. In 2023 she was invited to be on the selection jury for the IWM competition. Over the last four years, Sue has exhibited with the England and Wales Team at the International AcquarelloinFabriano watercolour festival, in Italy. She writes tutorial articles for the Leisure Painter Magazine. She is a Professional Associate with the SAA and a member of both the Association of Animal Artists and Women in Watercolor. She teaches weekly classes and provides workshops and demos to art clubs and societies together with tutoring painting holidays in Spain, France, Greece and the U.K.

Suitable for beginners of those with some watercolour experience, Sue’s week will be encouraging and informative.  Leading by example with demonstrations, tips and techniques, you will learn the main watercolour techniques including washes, wet-in-wet and colour mixing. Sue will share her love of watercolour with you showing you how to use transparent colour to bring vibrancy and freshness to your work and also how to add texture and pattern. We will explore how to work with a limited palette of colours to ensure harmony and cohesiveness in your work and how to overcome common watercolour challenges and remedy mistakes.

The experience will help you to become more confident when painting on location. We will also create sketches using line (pen) and wash. Sue will guide you step-by-step through paintings and provide demonstrations together with her regular special ‘Tip of the Day’.  There will be plenty of time to ask questions and receive one-on-one feedback.

Sue’s tutoring style is encouraging, supportive, relaxing and fun.
